“I am looking for someone to share in an adventure…” —Gandalf the Grey
Greetings fellow wayfarers! I know It’s been a while since my last post. To be honest, I almost gave up on this newsletter entirely. Earlier this year, I went through a very unpleasant period when I nearly lost faith in myself and my writing…
But a lot has changed since then! After much time devoted to prayer and discernment, I’ve emerged from this dark valley more confident and enthusiastic about my writing than ever before.
On that note, I’m excited to announce that I’m currently hard at work on my first book—a collection of essays exploring the crossroads of faith and sci-fi/fantasy fiction. About two-thirds of the chapters will be reprints of essays that have appeared on the Word on Fire and Voyage Comics blogs. The remaining third of the book will be brand new material! I hope to have the manuscript finished this summer. It’s been an exciting process so far and I can’t wait to share more details with you.
In the meantime, I’ve decided to relaunch this author newsletter with a renewed purpose. To keep things interesting, I plan to post a variety of content, including:
Updates on my writing life.
Updates on the progress of my current book
Sneak peeks of future projects.
Links to my latest articles and podcast appearances.
Lists of the books I’m currently reading.
Occasional exclusive essays (approx. 500-100 words) about topics related to sci-fi/fantasy.
Occasional exclusive SF/F short fiction!
I plan to release issues of the newsletter intermittently at first, as I am currently engrossed in putting together the book manuscript as well as juggling several other substantial writing commitments. In the near future (perhaps by the end of the summer or early autumn) I hope to send out new content on a biweekly basis.
One more issue… THE NEW NAME.
For a while, I was uncertain whether or not to keep the name Road to the Perilous Realm. I’ve been told that a new name might be in order, one that better reflects my current aim for this publication as an author newsletter to promote my books, short stories, freelance articles, and podcasts.
After much frantic brainstorming and feedback from my Twitter followers (Special shout-out to Will Wright of Will Wright Catholic!) I settled on Thomas Salerno’s Perilous Realms.
I chose this name because it embraced the “Perilous Realm” concept while also branding newsletter specifically as my author platform. As an extra bonus, it also sounds reminiscent of the titles of the pulp SF/F magazines of former years. Please let me know what you think of the new name by commenting below!
Finally, I’d like to thank all of you for your patience and support. Until we meet again, “the Road goes ever on…”
—Thomas
